History of Lower Windrush Garden Club
The Lower Windrush Garden Club was started in 1980 by a group of enthusiastic gardeners based in Standlake. They were Mr and Mrs Cuthbert and Ann Hickman. Its original name was The Lower Windrush Horticultural Society but the name was altered in the early 1990’s when membership numbers dropped and the committee decided that the new name Garden Club might encourage more people to join. The first President was Mrs Pickford.
In the early days we also had members from Northmoor and Stanton Harcourt and other small surrounding villages situated nearby. We rotated our monthly meetings in the old village halls of Standlake, Northmoor and Stanton Harcourt.
At first we just had the one Annual Show that was held in September. Over the years, we added the smaller Spring Bulb Show in March and the Mid- Summer Show in June. Various cups and plates were given to the society by members and these are presented to the winners of the different sections at the Annual Show and held by the winners for one year. We have also encouraged younger people to become interested in gardening and have included classes and awards at the Annual Show for pupils at the local Primary School and the Mulberry Bush School.
The aim of the club was to invite speakers from the horticultural world to give talks on their subject, illustrating them with slides or giving a practical demonstration. We have an annual full day outing each summer, visiting famous and interesting gardens or shows and we also have an evening outing to a more local place of interest. We have an annual Club Dinner around Christmas and a Pot Luck Supper and Quiz in August where members are able to socialize. New members are always welcome.
